what is Martial Arts?

For my first post, I thought it would be fun to start at the beginning - “what is Martial Arts?” Soon I will speak more specifically about Taekwondo- but for now, let’s think a bit bigger.

The easiest way to answer this question is with our good friend, Google. Google says martial arts are “various sports or skills, mainly of Japanese origin, that originated as forms of self-defense or attack, such as judo, karate, and kendo.”

Wikipedia says martial arts are “codified systems and traditions of combat practiced for a number of reasons such as self-defense; military, and law enforcement applications; competition; physical, mental and spiritual development; entertainment; and the preservation of a nations intangible cultural heritage...”

For us here at Elite Fire Taekwondo, martial arts are a lifestyle choice. We live with it, we constantly learn about it, and then we teach what we’ve learned to our families every day.

Personally - I believe martial arts are as broad as the sky above us - unlimited even - and we can only see just parts of it at a time. All who practice martial arts are students, even masters like myself and grand masters, because we all must work hard to see more of this sky above us. We must all practice, we must all fix our mistakes. Every year the sky above us changes, and the same happens with Taekwondo - every year new skills are taught and we must all study so that we remain at the top of our martial arts practice.

Taekwondo is a much larger experience than just kicks, punches and blocks. We teach life skills at Elite Fire Taekwondo. We work with all of our students who represent so many different characteristics, cultures, and ages (as long as you are 3 years old and older!). We take all precautions to keep our Taekwondo community safe, healthy and enthusiastic about our school; we treat every family at Taekwondo as if they were our own family - because we ARE all family!

Each day, I challenge myself to continue to become the best master i can for all of our students - I study and I practice for hours each day, and am very focused on learning all I can to teach our students how to achieve their own levels of success with Taekwondo. I enjoy sharing my passion for Taekwondo with our EFT family, and I am so glad we are all on this journey of perfecting our Taekwondo practice together!
