Simon’s Black Belt Project

My name is Simon Spencer. I am eleven years old. I am a student at Elite Fire Taekwondo. I started taekwondo when I was seven years old and have enjoyed it ever since. I first decided to start taekwondo because I was intrigued by the idea of having self defense skills and doing cool kicks. Four years later I have learned all of this and more.

When I started I was not aware that I would make so many friends. Now I have lots of friends. Even my master is my friend. Taekwondo is a great opportunity to make friends and you get to improve together.

Physical activity is a big part of taekwondo. There are a lot of different activities that you have to do because it takes you to be fit to succeed in taekwondo. You also have to be flexible to do sharp high kicks. But you can learn more and more tricks and how to get better and more flexible.

Taekwondo will improve your focus. There are three types of focus: mind, body, and eye. You need to use these when doing taekwondo. These three focuses are very important because it takes good focus and passion to succeed. There will be distractions but you will be told to ignore them. So you have to stay focused to overcome these distractions.

Respect is the biggest rule in taekwondo. You need to respect everyone no matter their rank. It doesn’t matter if you are a higher belt than them you still need to respect them. The people you need to pay the most respect to are your masters and your parents. That is why you bow to your masters and parents at the end of every class.

Every October there is a self defense month. In this month in all the classes you take you will learn self defense. Sparing is also self defense but you use it against more skilled opponents that know taekwondo. This helps you if you are getting bullied by other kids.

I would highly recommend taekwondo to anyone. It is a fun activity to experience.

I guarantee almost everyone will enjoy it especially with friends. It has been a great experience for me and I hope it will be for you.
